Tree service in Murrayhill and South Beaverton

Murrayhill was laid out as a planned community in the late 1980s, with curving streets, greenways between the houses and a shopping center at its heart. South of it, Progress Ridge was built a generation later around a former quarry lake. Together they make up the southern tip of Beaverton.

The trees of Murrayhill

ZIPs 97007 and 97008. Inside Beaverton city limits, around Murray Boulevard, Scholls Ferry Road and Barrows Road.

Planned communities plant their trees all at once. Murrayhill's street trees went in over a few years, and they have all reached full size within a few years of each other. That is why whole streets here face the same decisions at the same time.

The street trees are mostly red maple, sweetgum, ash and flowering pear, planted close together in narrow strips. At thirty-five years they are lifting sidewalks, crowding street lights and, in the case of pear and sweetgum, breaking in ice. The ash now carry a second problem, with emerald ash borer confirmed in Beaverton.

Between the streets, greenways and the power line corridor hold native fir, maple and alder, along with a lot of planted pine and cedar. Most of that land belongs to the homeowners association. The trees on it are the association's to manage, even when they shade your yard.

Progress Ridge is younger. Its trees are at the stage where structural pruning pays off most, and its small lots put every tree within reach of a roof. Getting the branch structure right now avoids the removals Murrayhill is dealing with today.

What we are usually called for in Murrayhill

Street tree pruning, one street at a time

Crown raising over sidewalks and the street, reduction away from houses and lights, and deadwood. Neighbors often book together, since the trees are the same age and need the same work. Tree trimming and maintenance.

Replacing failed street trees

Removing split pears, declining ash and sweetgums that have wrecked the sidewalk, under a city permit, with the stump taken out so the replacement can go in the same strip. Stump removal.

Common-area trees for the association

Hazard inspections and removals along greenways and paths, with written findings a board can act on. Tree removal.

Storm cleanup

Broken tops and hanging limbs after ice. Pear and sweetgum account for most of it, year after year. Emergency tree service.

Around Murrayhill

Local landmarks, and what the trees around each one tell you about your own.

Murrayhill Marketplace

The shopping center's parking lot trees are landscape trees required by the site's approval. It is the same rule that covers trees at any commercial or apartment property in the city: they can't be removed just because a manager wants them gone.

The Westside Trail corridor

The trail follows the power lines through the middle of the community. The utility controls what grows under the wires, and yards beside the corridor are open to wind from the southwest, the direction most winter storms come from.

Progress Lake and Progress Ridge

The old quarry is now a lake with new streets around it. Street trees here are young, and a first structural prune in the next few years will set their shape for life.

Barrows Road and Summer Creek

Barrows follows the creek along the Tigard line. Lots on the creek side fall inside regulated buffers, and the far bank is a different city with a different tree code.

Which tree rules apply in Murrayhill

Murrayhill and Progress Ridge are inside Beaverton, so the city's code applies. In practice there are usually two approvals to think about here, the city's and the association's.

Inside Beaverton city limits

The tree between the sidewalk and the street is a street tree. You maintain it, and removing it takes a city permit and normally a replacement from the city's approved list. Cutting 20 percent or more of the crown or roots counts as removal. Street trees have to clear 8 feet over the sidewalk, 12 feet over the street and 14 feet over arterials, and topping them is prohibited.

Most ordinary backyard trees need no permit. The exceptions are the trees the development code protects: significant and historic trees, trees in significant groves and natural resource areas, and landscape or mitigation trees that were kept or planted as a condition of the subdivision. If your lot backs onto a greenway, a creek or a preserved grove, treat the trees along that edge as protected until the Planning Division (503-526-2420) says otherwise.

Specific to Murrayhill

The Murrayhill Owners Association maintains the common areas and reviews changes to lots, and Progress Ridge has associations of its own. Street trees here are both a city matter and a covenant matter. Get the association's position in writing, then the city permit, and only then book the work. We can supply the written assessment that both will ask for.

The permit checker gives a first answer in two questions, and the permit guide has the detail. We check every tree's status before a job is booked.

Tree service questions from Murrayhill

Who is responsible for the street tree in front of my Murrayhill house?

Under city code the adjoining owner maintains a right-of-way tree, and removing it needs a city permit and usually a replacement. Your association may also require its approval. Check both before scheduling.

The tree shading my yard is in the HOA greenway. Can I prune it?

Not without the association's permission, because the tree is theirs. You can ask the board to have it pruned, and a short written note about dead or hanging limbs over your yard usually gets a prompt answer.

Should my street's ash trees be removed because of emerald ash borer?

Not automatically. Healthy ash can be protected with insecticide treatment by a licensed applicator. Trees already thin at the top are poor candidates. Since the street's ash are all the same age, it makes sense to assess them together.

Can neighbors book tree work together?

Yes, and it suits Murrayhill well. When several houses on a street need the same clearance pruning, the crew and the chipper set up once. Each owner still gets a separate written estimate.

Do you give free estimates in Murrayhill?

Yes. We walk the site, tell you what the tree needs, and put the scope in writing: what is cut, how it comes down, where the wood and chips go and whether the stump is included. Call (503) 386-0199 or send the form on this page.
